Pat Metheny nació el 12 de agosto de 1954 en Lee Summit, Missouri, suburbio al sureste de Kansas City, Estados Unidos. Su padre Dave tocaba la trompeta y Lois, su madre, fue cantante. Su abuelo materno Delmar también era trompetista profesional. Su hermano, el trompetista Mike Metheny, lo inició en el jazz.Después estudió con Wes Montgomery y Charlie Christian.
